Facebookistan

I personally think that Facebook is a very good tool when it comes to social networking. I think this because companies can use it to market themselves; also another big thing about it is that people can definitely reconnect with those who they have lost contact with. This is a powerful tool when talking about bringing people back together. But to every good thing there are a bunch of negatives that come with it as well. Like Facebook makes it easier for cyber bullies, also stalkers and even pedophiles to find young teenagers on Facebook. So it’s obvious that it has its problems as well. Some other things that I personally don’t like about Facebook and I’ve heard others talk about not liking as well is that they send information to advertisers because that makes them harass you to buy their products or subscribe to their companies. Also Facebook is said to increase chances of people developing different diseases. But that also deals with the amount of time spent in front of the computer screen. The segment with the rapist is very interesting to me because if you think about it anybody (rapist) can make an account and send you a friend request. And if they want to get you information to find you they certainly can get that off of Facebook. My final thoughts are that I hope that Facebook becomes more secure and safe for all its users, this will prevent people from being victims to cyber criminals/ bullies. This relates to the segment about the girl who was tracked on Facebook by the rapist. This is relates to how I think Facebook is not entirely secure and safe.

Blog Post 11

To me the library ethnography was a very useful assignment, I really never knew how to find books in our library until I did this assignment so it was a great assignment in my opinion, and what made it even better is I actually enjoyed doing it! It taught me how to look up and find books I want or need on the library catalog. You should definitely keep this assignment in your course next semester; I do not think there is a need to come up with something else. A topic that I wish we would have spent a little more time on was filter bubbles. We spent a good amount of time on it, but it was just very interesting to me because I have never heard of them. This topic intrigued me I didn’t know that sites can make your search results more direct for you based on where you are located and what you have searched most recently. Another topic that I would have loved to spend more time on was Common Rhetorical Devices; I think this topic is very interesting because a lot of companies use these devices when marketing their products. Thinking back I honestly don’t think there is anything that I can think of that we haven’t talked about in this class. I will be using the material we have covered in this class in classes like English 1102 when I take it in the spring. I have not used the researching skills that I have learned in my first two previous semesters here at UWG. I expect to apply these skills in other classes when I need to look up credible sources so I can have valid information in my work.

Blog Post #10

In a book, information that you will likely find varies depends on what type of book you are looking in. For example, if it is nonfictional book and more of factual book you can find facts. So to answer the second question; it can be both a good or bad source to use in a research paper, it all depends what kind of book you are using to get your information. You can use this source to gather facts for your research related to your topic.
In a blog post you will most likely find peoples thoughts or ideas on a particular topic. I think it wouldn’t be the best source to use in a RESEARCH paper because that’s not really credible. So I don’t think that using this source for research is a good idea.
In a scholarly journal article you can find information, facts that are most likely legit. This would be a great source for a research paper because you can definitely cite these. You can use it in research because you can gather info on your research paper.
Wikipedia you can find anything you need to know on any topic you search. This is a bad source to use a research paper because it is not credible, anyone can go on Wikipedia and change facts. You can use that source to gather you thoughts but using it to cite wouldn’t be the best idea.
In a Podcast you will find info that you can use. It would be okay information for a research paper because you can find anything you want. You can use this source to understand what your researching better.

The steps I took to find the article

The steps to finding the article were pretty straight forward.

  1. First I went to the UWG website and clicked library at the bottom.
  2. Then I clicked ARTICLES.
  3. Then clicked all databases A-Z.
  4. Next I copied the citation and pasted it into the 'GALILEO' search bar.
  5. Then scrolled down and it was the 11th.

Annotated Bibliograpghy Homework

After watching the video and reading the webpage I know that an annotated bibliography consists of three things. Those things are; citations, summaries, and annotations.  It basically tells your audience why that source is good and how it relates to the topic that you are presenting.  So it is a summary and evaluation to go along with it. It basically gives the person you are presenting your project to a sneak peek of what is to be expected. Showing them what is present in your presentation before you present, in other words it is a brief summary.

I think that you are requiring us to write an annotated bibliography because it requires us to actually do the research in advance so that we all will get the assignment done ON TIME. Also it helps you think about each source you are using and why you are using it. It is also a tool we can learn by doing in your class. Doing this assignment will help us and make our final group presentations the best they can be.

October 24 In Class Blog Post

The topics that we have covered in the couple weeks each deal with library research. Plagiarism is connected to library research because while researching and trying to do a paper or assignment you don’t want to plagiarize when researching in the library. Paraphrasing correctly, and Copyright vs. Plagiarism deal with library research in a way. Paraphrasing can be important and a useful tool while researching in the library. And knowing the difference between Copyright violation and Plagiarism and knowing what they both are can help you while doing library research to stay away from them. Open Content, Open Access, & Creative Commons licenses deal with library research because if you want to know what type of license in on a particular document that can help. And blog and podcasts are self-explanatory this is where people can, and enjoy learn stuff about anything.
I can apply this knowledge to other classes to avoid getting in trouble by taking other peoples information or ideas and using it like it is mine without giving them credit. Basically these are useful topics to keep you out of trouble.
I do not really have any questions about these topics.

Homework Assignment Due 10/23

While listening to Trouble For Elservier I was really intrigued with it, honestly I enjoyed listening to this. I found it interesting that he did not pay his workers so they were basically "slaves" and that led to them boycotting against Elservier, and they also told others not to fool with his work which basically demoted his business.

When listening to the second snippet; New England Journal of Medicine I learned about how a whole bunch of health tips that the public should be aware of were made free to the public. They basically were looking out for the public.

When listening to The Changing Nature of Knowledge I learned that the internet used to be very censored and that only a few thing were exposed when talking about knowledge. We now live in a day and age where everything on the internet becomes viral and seen when posted online. I think it has made us lazier in a sense because we just look on the internet for all of our answers.

I believe the common theme of these snippets are that if information is meant to be put out for the public or others it will somehow get out in some form or fashion. My reaction to these stories is that I find it very amusing what I learned by listening to these and like things used to be censored knowledge wise is a surprise to me.

I think you wanted us to listen to these snippets to understand that information is out there and is being released to the public every second. Also that us undergraduate students benefit from it by finding a lot of information and this can help us through college if we know the right info to use.

In Class Blog Post October 17th

In my own words plagiarism is to copy somebody else’s work without citing or giving the credit that person whom they copied or used work from. Basically taking all the credit for someone else’s work. There are many differences between plagiarism and copyright violations. Plagiarism is intellectual dishonesty and is handled by intellectual peers and the professional society and copyright violations are more of a legal offense that is handled in courts and are far more serious. The way to avoid plagiarism is to cite the author and the way you can avoid get the authorization from the copyright owner. An example of plagiarism that is not a copyright violation is like copying and pasting ideas from an article on your paper for class. And an example of a copyright violation that is not plagiarism is like if I made a song and took the beat of someone else’s song or took the lyrics of someone else and not giving them credit for it. This often results in lawsuits and being sued which can be avoidable.

Impressing People At Party- In Class Blog Post 10/10

If I was at a party and I saw a couple people that I am trying to impress or make friends with and they were having a conversation about something that I relatively knew a lot about. I would first just stand there and wait until the perfect time to introduce myself and get in on the conversation and show them that I am educated in what they are discussing and know what I am talking about. To show them that I am not just some creeper, I would wait until one had a question for the other person and then answer it so that the person asking the question gets the idea that I actually know what I am talking about. Or I would wait until a pause in the conversation and come in and put my opinions/thoughts about the subject matter. FLIPPING the scene around would be the easier part. If I was having a conversation with my friend and someone comes around and tries to get in on the conversation I would first I would listen to what they say and their opinions on the subject and if I relate and know what they are saying and agree in the slightest way I will engage them into the conversation and make it a three way conversation.

In class blog post 10/3

In class blog post:

Think about the filter bubble video from last week. That talked about google and we're in library databases, but could the basic idea of a filter bubble apply to the different databases? Why or why not? Include which databases you searched and any differences you noticed in the results you got. What, if any, differences did you notice in the types of topics covered in each?

When thinking about the filter bubble video from last week that talked about google and comparing it to our library databases I feel like filter bubbles do not exist in the databases. This is because I feel like Google searches are more broad and you get millions of results so filter bubbles sometimes can be necessary, but for our library databases such as (at EBSCO Host) and GALILEO your results when doing a refined search are more direct not as broad so filter bubbles can't exist. When searching GALILEO and ProQuest in class I found that the results were different between the searches but I don't think that is because of filter bubbles. I think that is because they are peer reviewed so there are going to be different articles and results, but that doesn't mean they are not similar.

When searching key words like Art, Art Culture, Art Influences, the databases brought up similar results about my research topic. But when I searched the same thing into Google it brought up so many results and none of them were similar to the databases.

In Class Blog 9/26

Reflecting on what I have found so far on my research question is not too easy. It is hard to find research on my specific question. I still need to find more about how art can affect people or how art tends to affect people throughout the world. I certainly had to rethink my question making it broader and less opinionated since the last time I posted about it. Before it was a general question that was kind of hard to do research on not opinions and now I think I have steered it in the way of a research question the best I could.

What do I think of the suggestions for getting out of the filter bubble? Am I going to try any of them?

First off let me start by saying Eli Pariser did a marvelous job with his presentation about “filter bubbles”. After reading the 10 Ways to Pop Your Filter Bubble, I think they would be very useful when trying to find searches with the best results. Things like burning my cookies and clearing my web history are good tools in popping the filter bubbles. And ironically I usually do these things when I use my laptop it seems to make things run smoother, and I had no clue before today that doing this was making my searches more direct and more general. Other suggestions like making my Facebook private, hiding my birthday, turning off targeted ads, and going into site as ‘anonymous’ are other suggestions that the site gave that I never really did before. I can see what it means by staying anonymous on sites to make searches more broad but I do not quite agree with the other suggestions like hiding my birthday, and making my profile private on Facebook. I don’t see how that would affect my searches but that is what it says to do so it is probably best. But being that I already clear my web history and burn my cookies when surfing the web those are suggestions I already do. But as for the other ones maybe turning off targeted ads and going into sites as anonymous is something that I may try in the future. I am not so sure on making my Facebook, and birthday private just yet!

Citation

The book I chose for the homework is The Queer Encyclopedia of the Visual Arts. Heres goes the citation:
Summers, C.J. (2004). The Queer Encyclopedia of the Visual Arts. California: Cleis Press Inc.
1. This book is an encyclopedia of different kinds of art from artists and cultures all over the world.
2. It is a reliable source because I looked up the editor and what I found was good information and she is an American literary scholar. Also I believe that this book is a credible source because it is based on facts.
3. How can I use this book to answer my research question? I can use it to explore the different kinds of art throughout the world and how it affect each culture, and the importance of art in different cultures.

In Class Blog 9/19

How can you apply the skills you have learned so far in this class to work in other classes?

Applying the skills which I have learned so far in this class for other classes will be necessary for me. This semester I have already had to do research about stereotypes for my public speaking class and I used what I have learned about GALILEO to do that research. Also for my psychology class I’ll have to do research later on in the semester. Then I will probably use what I have learned in the library ethnography assignment on how to find different books because this assignment requires research from hard copy books and not online.
Last year I wish I would have known the things I did now when I had to do research papers for English. But I am planning to take another English course next semester so I will definitely be using the skills that this class has taught me. This will make my research papers less stressful because now I know different effective ways to research and to find credible sources that can be used in my paper. Also I will not have trouble citing the information that I find, which was a problem I had in my previous English class. These are just a few of the ways that I plan to use the skills I have learned in this class for other classes this semester and in the future.

Ingram Library VS Public or High School

Using the catalogs from the Ingram Library and the ones in the public library and high school is a really different experience. Even though I have not been to a public library since I was a little kid. I would think it would be different and High School is different because I know that in high school I never really did catalog searches it was only google. And google never is completely direct with the topic you are looking for you get thousands of results. But with the Ingram catalog you get a few results that go hand in hand with the topic you are looking for. That is a big difference that I think makes the library catalog better, but with that being said I think the library catalog is not user friendly. Meaning it is not so easy to pick up and use unless you have been taught or shown how to use it. This is one of the reasons why I believe most people dont bother using it. But overall the library catalog brings less results but that is better when trying to narrow down a topic.

Two Books On My Topic

The two books I found during my search were; Aesthetics in transportation: guidelines for incorporating design, art and architecture by Lajos Héder and Creative America: Arts & the pursuit of happiness by National Endowment for the Arts. There both relate to my topic of art, but the one I would pick to go forward and do my paper on is Creative America because I believe art plays a big in everybody's life whether they know it or not. It relates to my topic because it talks about America a place of many different lifestyles that all can come together through art.

Interview on Research papers

For my assignment I interviewed James, he is an upperclassmen here at UWG majoring in biology. He told me that he has had to do numerous research papers in his college career. He also told me that professors don't really care about how much information you have but they care more about how it relates to your topic and that you cite it correctly. Later he stated that the most important thing when doing a research paper is citing where you get your information from, because if you do not cite it can be looked at by the teacher as made up material. His most recent research paper was on the body which ironic relates to his major. He told me that it took him almost about a month just to research and do the outline. After that the paper was very easy to write and get done. I personally have had to do a research paper since I have been attending UWG and I haven't taking that much time to do the research. So next time I will take into consideration James' experience and hopefully that will make my paper even better.

Replacement For CRAP Test

My replacement for the CRAP test was SIFT.

S.I.F.T stands for Safe, Informative, Factual, and Thoughtful.
When you do research you want the site to be those four things.

And I used Sift because according to Dictionary.com to sift means to examine and sort carefuly for evidence. Thats what you do when deciding what sites to use for your research.

Getting To Know Me (LIBR 1101)

My name is Joel Christian, I am from Toronto Canada. This is my second year at UWG. I am a nursing major and looking to minor in psychology, and I love music, sports, and food.
